1. Use mirrors

Mirrors can help reflect objects farther than they would normally be visible, making rooms seem larger. Mirrors should not be placed where they will block sunlight or cause glare; however, if you have a room with a lot of natural daylight, a mirror can actually reduce the amount of light entering the room.

2. Hang artwork

Artwork can add color and beauty to any room. Artwork hanging high on the wall helps bring light down, while artwork hung low creates eye contact with guests. If you want something more permanent, consider placing artwork on the floor.

3. Place rugs close together

Rugs separate hardwood floors and carpeting, keeping them clean and clear. However, if you have two or three similarly-sized rugs side by side, the area between them is lost space. To avoid this problem, place rugs closer together, leaving about 12 inches between each rug.

4. Create open spaces

Creating small “rooms” within a larger space allows air to circulate throughout the room. Placing furniture at the edges of the room increases the open space. As an alternative, you can hang curtains across the entire length of a window, which keeps sunlight out without blocking views.

5. Add sconces

Sconces are ideal lighting fixtures for smaller spaces

because they offer versatility and flexibility. You can choose a single sconce to illuminate a specific corner, or several to provide ambiance throughout the room. Sconces work best when mounted over windows, fireplaces, and doorways.

6. Paint colors to complement space

It doesn’t matter what type of paint you use—whether oil, latex, or enamel—the color you select should match the rest of your decor. A neutral color scheme makes rooms appear larger, since most viewers tend to focus on the center of the room rather than its corners.
